Cats Conquered Hollywood: How 74 Minutes of Cat Videos Suddenly Became the 2026 Box Office Hit

255 Theaters and a Place in the American Top 10

On August 7, 2026, a very unusual release appeared in US cinemas – “CatVideoFest 2026”. Many theater posters list its duration as 74 minutes, although Box Office Mojo reports 1 hour 10 minutes. There is no complicated plot, expensive special effects, or famous actors. On screen are cat videos compiled into one program.

And it worked. In its opening weekend, “CatVideoFest 2026” earned $568,414 in the US, was shown in only 255 theaters, and took 10th place in the American box office. The average gross per theater was $2,229.

What Is Actually Shown in “CatVideoFest 2026”

This is not a random playlist from YouTube or TikTok. The program is curated by director and curator Will Braden, author of the famous series “Henri, le Chat Noir.” For the annual edition, he reviews a huge number of materials and selects clips that work specifically on the big screen. The program includes:

  • funny home videos featuring cats;
  • original videos sent directly to the organizers by the authors;
  • animated works and music clips;
  • popular cat videos from the internet;
  • short stories and unusual video formats about cats;

The festival’s official description emphasizes that the organizers gather the best new clips, classics, and unique submissions into one film program. Part of the proceeds from screenings is directed by theaters to local shelters and animal welfare organizations.

Cats Outperformed Films with Much More Serious Promotion

The most striking aspect was not even the total earnings. “CatVideoFest 2026” earned more on its debut weekend than several traditional film releases.

The documentary “Cookie Queens,” associated with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s production company, launched in 446 theaters but earned only $354,262 that same weekend. The biopic about Anthony Bourdain, “Tony,” made $348,995 in six theaters. Overall, cats outgrossed both films, although “Tony” had a much higher per-theater average due to its very limited release.

The numbers explain why the story about cats quickly spread across the media:

  1. “CatVideoFest 2026” earned $568,414 in its first three days.
  2. The release was available in only 255 theaters.
  3. The film entered the top ten highest-grossing releases of the weekend.
  4. In its first full week, gross rose to $656,628.
  5. By the second weekend, total US earnings approached $800,000.

By August 19, The Numbers estimated the US gross at approximately $800,020, while Box Office Mojo cited a very close figure of $799,927. This is no longer a one-time oddity of the first night but a noticeable result for a special independent film release.

Why People Pay for Something They Can Watch for Free on Their Phone

Here the story gets more interesting. Cat clips have been available for free for a long time, but the theater does not sell access to a specific video. It sells a shared reaction.

Braden explained the format’s popularity by the fact that laughter in the theater works differently than watching a clip alone. People come with families, groups, children. The format requires no knowledge of plot, language, or previous episodes. Additionally, there is a charitable component – part of the ticket price helps local cats.

CatVideoFest’s Box Office Has Been Growing for Several Years

The success of 2026 did not arise out of nowhere. The series has been gradually building its audience. In 2023, the opening weekend brought $122,214; in 2024, $280,054; in 2025, $452,686. In 2026, the figure rose to $568,414.

Over three years, the opening gross increased by more than 4.6 times. Compared to 2025 alone, the growth was approximately 25.6%.

Calling “CatVideoFest 2026” a competitor to the blockbuster hits of the year would be an exaggeration. There are no hundreds of millions of dollars here. But for a program made up of short cat videos, making the American weekend top 10 and almost $800k domestic gross in under two weeks shows one clear thing – the big screen can sell even content that the internet has long taught us to get for free.
