It is often called an \u201ceye prosthesis\u201d, \u201cbionic eye\u201d, \u201cartificial retina\u201d or \u201cretinal implant\u201d, but it is technically more accurate to speak of a <strong>subretinal wireless implant<\/strong> that replaces the function of lost photoreceptors in the central retina. That is why topics like \u201cPRIMA Stargardt\u201d, \u201cretinal implant for Stargardt disease\u201d, \u201cnew treatments for central vision loss\u201d, \u201chow to regain reading ability with macular degeneration\u201d and \u201cclinical trials of the bionic eye\u201d are quickly gaining attention in Ukraine as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, it is important to separate the facts immediately. The best\u2011known PRIMA outcome \u2014 <strong>27 out of 32 patients who were able to read again one year after implantation<\/strong> \u2014 was published for patients with <strong>geographic atrophy from dry age\u2011related macular degeneration<\/strong>, not yet as a proven final result specifically for <strong>Stargardt disease<\/strong>. The Stargardt indication is being officially expanded, and a separate clinical study for inherited retinal degenerations has already been registered. So PRIMA for Stargardt is not fantasy but a real development direction; however, as of April 2026 it remains under clinical investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What PRIMA is and why the implant is called a breakthrough<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PRIMA is a central vision restoration system made of two main components: a miniature subretinal implant and specialized glasses with a camera and an infrared projector. The camera captures the scene, a processor enhances contrast, brightness and scale, and then the glasses transmit data and power to the implant using infrared light. The implant itself sits under the retina and stimulates preserved cells, bypassing the damaged photoreceptors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main innovation of PRIMA is its <strong>fully wireless operation<\/strong>. Unlike older systems that required cables and external power sources, PRIMA works as a light\u2011sensitive photovoltaic microchip. This reduced the surgical complexity of the device and is one reason the technology is seen as one of the most promising solutions in the \u201cvision implant\u201d, \u201cmodern medical devices for the blind\u201d, \u201cwireless retinal implant\u201d and \u201celectronic eye prosthesis\u201d segments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another important fact is the device size. The implant is roughly <strong>2\u00d72 mm<\/strong> and contains <strong>378 light\u2011sensitive pixels<\/strong>. This is not a \u201creturn to normal vision\u201d in the classical sense, but this architecture has already allowed patients to distinguish letters, numbers, words and large high\u2011contrast objects again. For people who have lost central vision, this means not just a technical improvement but a real return of functional skills \u2014 reading, spatial orientation, recognizing signs and everyday items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PRIMA clinical trials: the numbers that made the technology known<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strongest evidence for PRIMA\u2019s efficacy came from the <strong>PRIMAvera (NCT04676854)<\/strong> program. The study included <strong>38 patients<\/strong> with geographic atrophy from dry age\u2011related macular degeneration, aged over 60, with very low visual acuity in at least one eye. After 12 months, 32 participants were evaluated. <strong>26 of 32 patients<\/strong> showed a clinically significant improvement in visual acuity, and <strong>27 of 32<\/strong> were able to read letters, numbers and words at home using prosthetic vision. The average improvement was about <strong>5 lines<\/strong> on the visual acuity chart, and the best individual result reached <strong>12 lines<\/strong> or <strong>59 letters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical meaning of these results is huge. Participants reported being able to read books, product labels, signs and subway markings. With the magnification function, the PRIMA glasses can scale the image up to <strong>12 times<\/strong>, and in some cases acuity with digital enhancements reached the equivalent of <strong>20\/42<\/strong>. For the medical technology market this became the first convincing example that a retinal implant can restore not just light perception but actual <strong>central vision<\/strong> suitable for reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safety must also be mentioned separately. According to a publication in <em>The New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>, 19 participants experienced <strong>26 serious adverse events<\/strong> related to the procedure or device. At the same time, <strong>81%<\/strong> of these events occurred in the first two months after surgery, and <strong>95%<\/strong> of them resolved within two months from onset. This does not mean the technology carries zero risk, but it indicates that the risks were mostly early, manageable and compatible with continued use of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can PRIMA help with Stargardt disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the topic is especially important for a Ukrainian audience. <strong>Stargardt disease<\/strong> is an inherited retinal disorder that causes progressive loss of central vision, often beginning in adolescence or early adulthood. The National Eye Institute explicitly notes that the most typical symptom is a gradual deterioration of central vision, which makes reading, face recognition and tasks requiring fine detail difficult. Official sources also emphasize that currently <strong>there is no approved treatment for Stargardt disease<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why PRIMA attracts such interest. The mechanism of Stargardt disease partially overlaps with the logic behind PRIMA: photoreceptors in the macula degenerate, but other retinal cells remain sufficiently preserved for some time to be electrically stimulated. Science Corporation\u2019s official page explicitly states that the company is <strong>investigating the use of PRIMA for patients with Stargardt<\/strong>, and in March 2026 the company announced a <strong>clinical program expansion<\/strong> to Stargardt disease and retinitis pigmentosa. In addition, ClinicalTrials.gov lists a separate study <strong>NCT07266584<\/strong> evaluating the safety and efficacy of PRIMA products in patients with inherited macular\u2011affecting retinal degeneration, including Stargardt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this means for patients in Ukraine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Ukraine this topic has not only scientific but practical value. Queries like \u201cStargardt treatment in Ukraine\u201d, \u201cclinical trials of retinal implant\u201d, \u201cwhere to get Stargardt diagnosed\u201d, \u201cbionic eye cost\u201d, \u201chow to join an international clinical trial\u201d, \u201cnew technologies for vision restoration\u201d and \u201ccan you read after a retinal implant\u201d are entirely logical. But patients need to understand that <strong>PRIMA is not yet a routinely available commercial solution for Stargardt<\/strong> and remains an innovative medical device at the clinical development stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of March\u2013April 2026 the company reports a submitted <strong>CE mark<\/strong> application in the EU and a parallel submission to the <strong>FDA<\/strong> for regulatory approval, with the first commercial launch expected primarily in Europe. This means Ukrainian patients following topics like \u201cPRIMA implant in Europe\u201d, \u201cwhere the retinal implant is available\u201d, \u201cStargardt clinical trial\u201d or \u201cnew treatments for central blindness\u201d should already focus on international centers, official clinical trial registries, genetic diagnostics and consultations with specialized retinal specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PRIMA is not just a headline about an \u201ceye prosthesis\u201d but a real medical device platform that has already demonstrated the ability to restore reading to a portion of patients with severe central vision loss. The most striking figure \u2014 <strong>27 of 32 patients<\/strong> \u2014 is clinically confirmed, but so far for geographic atrophy in dry AMD. For <strong>Stargardt disease<\/strong> the technology looks very promising because new clinical trials are already officially targeting inherited retinal degenerations.
